This week, I took on more responsibility in the class teaching the project for this week, popsicle canvases.
Two assembled and partially colored popsicle canvases made by a student and hung up as examples.
On Monday, I watched the demonstration and helped individually as I have done in previous weeks. The students made their canvases and had a blast coloring them with markers, colored pencils, and crayons. After they finished, the students were given a color-by-number, which allows them to do something art-related, but also practice number recognition and counting.
On Wednesday, Alexis offered to let me give the demonstration, which I happily did. The students were quick to catch on and needed little guidance. A few tried to use the tape for other purposes, though, so Alexis and I tore off tape from the roll for them instead. The students on Wednesday also got a chance to color on the coloring pages. The second group of the day were given the chance to try using paint, but they got it all over the table. We decided to stick with markers for now, until we get table covers.
On Thursday, the students were given their own tape rolls and warned that this was a privilege. I drew the steps on the board and showed a quick demonstration. The students were able to follow the steps and did so during reading time. They proceeded to spend the actual class time coloring on the canvases and coloring pages. The second group of the day was selected to help bag snacks for next week, so we all spent 45 minutes bagging spicy popcorn and Christmas cookies.
After the students left on Thursday, Alexis and I planned out what we will be doing next week, sewing.
