As the first week in October, cooler weather has officially set in, and that means everyone is preparing for fall. With that as the focus for the next few weeks, the students are starting off the month making leaf garlands. It is a pretty simple activity with plenty of room for creativity. Some of the students wanted their work displayed and their work is pictured below.
Garlands with various colored leaves and acorns are hung up on the wall. The students wanted them hung up for display instead of taking them home.
On Monday, I prepared for class by precutting the leaves. This way, the students could focus on coloring and having fun with the project instead of spending the whole time trying to cut the leaves out. They loved the project! They created colorful leaves and practiced patterns while making the garlands. They needed help with the hole puncher, but other than that, they were able to work independently.
On Wednesday, the students were able to cut the leaves themselves. They spent the first twenty minutes coloring the leaves with markers and the rest of the class cutting them out and stringing them on the yarn. For the middle school students, this was a pretty chill day listening to music and making a fun craft.
On Thursday, the high school students chose to practice more sewing instead of working on the garland. They were given a choice because the garland is okay, but they would have been finished and bored pretty quickly. Practicing sewing again gave the students who were absent a chance to practice as well. The high school students will be creating a larger sewing project later, so letting them practice sewing gave them a chance to better prepare for a future lesson instead of doing a craft better suited to the younger students who are still working on improving coordination and patterns.
Overall, this week was pretty calm and laid back. Next week, I will teach the older students about artist trading cards, so I spent a few hours outside of the Mix and classes preparing for that.
